Costello Sandwich and Sides
"The Mess." It's one of Costello Sandwich and Sides's "icon" sandwiches, a claim that's backed by a cult following so devout, it inspired one Chicagoist writer to craft a poem about it. Indeed, the heaping pile of ham, capicola, and Genoa salami is made all the messier by having the sides (french fries and cole slaw) scooped right onto the sub roll.
The rest of the iconic sandwiches on the menu include creations as varied as the hummus- and cheese-based Village Veggie (named for Roscoe Village, the mini chain's first home) and the Southern Reuben with turkey, pastrami, and thousand island dressing. Like many of Costello's sandwiches, the reuben is baked, further distinguishing the sandwich shop from its competitors. In fact, Costello's is known to be so packed on weekends that the eatery becomes standing-room only, much to the chagrin of the floors being walked all over.
