Boneshaker 2013
“Our Halloween events are about exploration, mystery, play and discovery, not gore and fear, which Halloween has disappointedly become about,” Redmoon Theater artistic director Frank Maugeri quipped to the Chicagoist before last years Boneshaker. “Our event is more like a carnival, but then it’s not—it's more than that—because here you can determine your own experience." What constitutes that experience? An organ player wringing music from a fire-spitting instrument, a 30-person punk-rock marching band, and the Underwater Shadow Puppet World, which brings dreams and nostalgia to life. Dressed in wild costumes or suits with wildly loose ties, guests frolic among Redmoon's signature installations of whimsy, skating around an indoor roller rink or starring in their own two-minute live-feed movie. Fueling this spectacle will be beer from a kegway, hot dogs roasted on a fire candelabra, and 400 pounds of cream cheese.
Boneshaker 2013
One part puppetry, one part visual design, and one part theatrical arts, the collective known as Redmoon Theater wants nothing more than to transform people's experience of the city. Over the past 23 years, the theater has made it their mission to use large scale theatrical events to encourage community, creativity, and an empowered democracy. Their site-specific performances have been viewed by more than 250,000 people in over 125 different locations. Some of their biggest productions include Twilight Orchard, which turned Columbus Park into a 17th century palace; and Astronaut's Birthday, a five-story-tall graphic novel rendered on the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art. But neither of these matched the scale of Sink. Sank. Sunk..., the tale of a love-mad mayor that incorporated the El, the Sears Tower, and the Chicago River.
