The Hotel: Lake Hawea Hotel

Located on the shores of its glittering namesake waters, Lake Hawea Hotel is an award-winning 4-star hotel geared around chic family retreats. Groupies in units of four arrive to a spacious Family Room with signature touches from the local area, like blankets hand spun from Wanaka-farmed merino and art pieces by Kay Todd. The colour palette was designed to replicate the feel of late autumn, while modern conveniences like Wi-Fi internet and flat screen TVs give a contemporary edge.

All dwellings come with their own private balcony, best enjoyed with a glass of wine while admiring the views over Lake Hawea and snow-capped mountains. The hotel itself offers more opportunities to relax and recharge courtesy of restaurant The Grill Room, which was recently awarded the Beef and Lamb Excellence Award for 2012. First up, grab a pair of skis or a snowboard and head to one of four ski fields – Cardrona, Treble Cone, Snowfarm and the Snowpark – to carve up the glittering powder. Savour the alpine atmosphere with a hot chocolate after a day spent on the slopes then return back to the hotel to snuggle up by the fire.

Even more active pursuits like boating, kayaking, fishing and golf are within easy reach, or for those who prefer a less high octane adventure there are plenty of walking and hiking trails passing by awe-inspiring natural sights. Then hop in the car and travel to Wanaka for a cheery village atmosphere or venture further afield to Queenstown to shop for locally-made wares and sweets.
